Tension Headache

Do you have a migraine or do you have a tension headache? Well, if you are in pain you probably don't care too much, and all you want to do is stop the pain. So to some extent, for the layman, just trying to get pain relief, which type of headache they have is probably academic.

If that is what you want to achieve it is in fact, fortunate that, whether you have a tension headache or a migraine, and you want to prevent the next one, many of the recommendations are common to both.

Your doctor is the first person to consult about repeated headaches, to ascertain that there is no sinister underlying health problem, but if he is satisfied you have no problems in that direction, before resorting to medications you should look first at self-help approaches to prevent your next headache. Which of course means finding out what is the cause.

While it is different for every individual, the most common causes of tension headache is of course stress, but alcohol, lack of sleep and irregular meals can also cause a tension headache. You are probably aware that migraine can be triggered by these lifestyle factors. But migraines can also be caused by a surprisingly wide variety of food intolerances, hormonal imbalances and even factors such as the weather.

In lay-man's terms, migraine is more severe than a tension headache, it will often be accompanied by visual disturbances, nausea and sufferers tend to have increased sensitivity to sound or light. Migraines will tend to last longer – often up to three days. In a nutshell, the changes that occur in the brain during a migraine attack can affect the whole body, whereas with a tension headache the pain is largely from tension in the scalp, neck and shoulder.

So whether you are looking for a home remedy to treat or prevent a tension headache or a migraine, you will benefit from good diet management (to control your blood sugar) and a healthy life-style. You can find more help for all of this in the resources on this site.
